I tricked you, but just a little.
Today’s post is about…
Affirmations!
gasp! The horror!
I knew if I put affirmations somewhere in the title a lot of you would tune out, but bear with me for a minute.
Why am I writing about affirmations, you ask?
The idea behind positive affirmations is pretty simple.
Most of us have a lifetime’s worth of experience at criticizing ourselves for any real or imagined error. If they gave out grades for negative self-talk, we’d get an A+ (of course, giving yourself an A+ is a little tough when you’re critical of yourself).
We grow up believing certain things about ourselves or comparing ourselves negatively to others. And we’ve become really good at it, haven’t we?
So, since there’s no magic pill or genie to cast a spell that will immediately change all of that negative self-talk to positive self-talk, we have to start somewhere.
Positive affirmations are a way to change that negative self-talk into something more, you guessed it, positive.
Now, I’m not saying that spending 5-minutes thinking good thoughts will erase a lifelong habit, but if you stick with it for a few days…
you will start to see some changes.
Here are a few ideas to get you started, pick whichever affirmations sound the most believable to you (you might not believe it’s 100% true, but if you believe it’s 60% true give it a try):
- I see myself through loving and accepting eyes.
- I am resourceful.
- I deserve to be loved and supported.
- I deserve to be treated well.
- I make a difference.
- I do small things with great love.
- I have the strength to do the things I need to do.
- I am strong and capable.
- I can do whatever I set m mind to.
- I am gentle with myself and others.
- I focus on the good in myself and others.
- I am secure and capable.
- I am confident and self-assured.
- I make realistic demands on myself.
- I am willing to love myself.
- I am a valuable and worthwhile person.
- I deserve validation and praise.
- I deserve rest and relaxation.
- I am better able to love myself and others when I am rested and relaxed.
- By accepting myself, I reflect light all around me.
- I have the courage to make my own choices.
- I say “Yes” to life.
- I have the courage to take responsibility for myself.
- I empower myself by accepting risk as part of my life.
- I plan for the future, but I live for the now.
- I am capable and creative
What other affirmations did you come up with? How did it feel? Let us know in the comments.

Linda, Stuart wanted me to tell you – “You’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and doggone it, people like you.”
Hope your day gets better!
Well how about that! I gave myself an affirmation earlier today without even realizing it! I told myself I like who I am…and who I’m becoming. I think I can add to that list, huh?

Hi Katie,
I love affirmations. They help us stay focused on who we are.
You have some good ones. I specially love: I say “Yes” to life. Very positive and bright.
I also like to use: I am perfect as God created me.
It’s a very peaceful statement.
Thanks for your beautiful list. Loving blessings

Thanks Andrea! I love how the affirmations you use fit different moods
Hi Katie,
Not those affirmations again.
As much as some of us may tire of hearing them they really do work.
During a challenging period in my life I was nearly on the verge of being let go from my job. My performance was terrible. Everyday I went to work thinking it was my last day on the job. Then one morning I looked at myself in the mirror and said today is going to be a great day. And guess what? It was the best day I had ever had. From then on that practice has evolved and become a lot more specific and built on the solid foundation of faith I have accomplished some things.
So Katie I find each and everyone of the affirmations in this post not only valuable but also life changing. It was a pleasure to meet you through your work.
Great Post!
